a round ball won't kill deer? And that black powder, it's not worth the trouble either. That deer isn't REALLY dead since you shot it with a 12 bore round ball powered by black powder!

It will even work fine with the wrong bullet if its goes into the lungs. Seen many killed in my day with a 222 and a 50 grainer through the lungs or in the neck.

byron, I think the .223 /556 will work on deer with the right bullet.

I'm thinking of trying my mini 14 on deer. The deer I am seeing aren't very big here in TN.

Paul has kidded me so much about shooting deer with 5.56mm M262 ammo (the mousegun)that I was begining to feel bad about myself and the measure of my manhood....

Kansas muzzleloading season is open and this morning I upgraded to a 12 bore express rifle....72 calibre pure lead ball and 125 grains of black should be enought gun to kill deer....

I had just finished my second cup of coffee when this fat doe walked past me deer condo (some have deer blinds or stands...I have a deer condo) at about 75 yards...

At the shot the deer did the predictable thing and died...it appears the shot is a bit back but she was quartered away and the ball exited in front of the off shoulder...

In truth....other than the size of the entrance hole there was very little difference in the internal damage....

Overall...the AR15 is much easier to shoot....
