Pretty sure this has come up before but... (reply)

It's always been car-bean here and when I was growing up. I never heard it any other way. Recently someone referred to it as car-bine (wine) and it caught me up a bit. Doesn't matter really but I was curious.

Next challenge:

Whale-an

or

Wheel-an

The good Colonel, of course.

Born Nathaniel Bumppo..... (reply)

and orphaned at a young age and rescued by Moravian Missionaries and raised by the Delaware with Chingachgook as his tribal guardian & sponsor.

The following narrates how he grew from the juvenile "deerslayer" to the blooded brave "hawkeye"

"Good!" he repeated, for this was an English word much used by the savages, "good! young head; young heart, too. Old heart tough; no shed tear. Hear Indian when he die, and no want to lie—what he call him?"

"Deerslayer is the name I bear now, though the Delawares have said that when I get back from this war-path, I shall have a more manly title, provided I can 'arn one."

"That good name for boy—poor name for warrior. He get better quick. No fear there,"

—the savage had strength sufficient, under the strong excitement he felt, to raise a hand and tap the young man on his breast,—

"eye sartain—finger lightning—aim, death—great warrior soon. No Deerslayer—Hawkeye—Hawkeye—Hawkeye. Shake hand."

You can say CarBEAN or you can say CarBYNE (reply)

I've heard carbine pronounced both ways; CarBYNE and CarBEAN.

I tend to accept the first, as a farm combine machine is pronounced ComBYNE and things are ComBYNED together.

BUT, in The Last of the Mohicans, the nickname for Hawkeye: 'La Longue Carabine' (Long Rifle) which was also used by the French speakers I ran into when I was stationed in Germany for our full sized M16A2s compared to their FAMAS bullpups, pronounced it as CaraBEAN

So there.

In California it was always pronounced to rhyme with “bean” by the majority of people, but upon moving to Washington state I discovered that the most folks used the “wine” pronunciation.

Of course Washingtonians also called a creek a crick, so I figured they were suspect to begin with…..
