Do I ever need a wide rear sight.

Very good! Opening up that rear sight has helped me a bunch before. My 1963 51 navy had a pretty substantial notch in the hammer when I got it and I figured it had been opened up but I saw a couple other early Navy Arms models and they were similarly setup.

It was raining so I spent time in the shop cleaning up the 1851 front sight, re-shaping it, polishing and blueing it. I opened up the rear notch and we should be ready to go!
