Shot three Pocket Pistols this morning after first grinding (reply)

1) 1849 Pocket Model .31: dead on with the round ball; 2 inches high with the conical and it was shooting 2 inches to the right. A tap with a brass rod on the side of the front sight brought everything into line.

2) next up was the you Uberti/Colt Black Powder Arms 5-1/2" 1862 Pocket Police .36. Upon measuring after the site was installed the diameter of the barrel WAS .608"while the diameter of the barrel plus the front sight was .982" giving me .374" of site height. I always take half of this detracted from the barrel/front sight diameter to see what I have to work with. In this case it was .187". Subtracting that from the .982" my target was .800". When I stopped grinding with the Ryobi it measured .799".(Same height as the above 1849 Pocket Model) It was dead on for round balls and 2 inches high with the conical bullet using 17.0 grains H7777/Triple F. Pleasant shooting with round balls; stiff recoil with the conical.

3)For this I use the 4-1/2" Pocket Police. I stopped at .797" for the barrel/front sight measurement. The round ball was dead on and the conical 1 inch high.

All targets were shot at it and across the card table distance of 7 yards. I have done so many of these I have a pretty good idea what I need to front sight to be on the Pocket Models. Next I switch to the 1851 Navy and 1861 Navy .36s. If the weather holds I will then switch to 1860 Army .44s.

The first picture is the Colt Black Powder Arms in the second picture is the .31 Pocket Model

New Front Sight For The 1851

I decided to go ahead and cut the dovetail and install the Remington front sight on my 1851 Navy. John Taffin has been putting them on his guns plus I need a front sight I can see. That little bitty brass thingy is hard to see in bright sunlight!

Cutting and fitting

I am not sure I will like it. It's very thin and my old eyes don't see as well as they used to. I have other sights I may try. I will give this a go first and see how it works.
