I wondered about that. I know Colt and Winchester were famous for ‘using up leftovers’ so sometimes serial numbers and options didn’t jive exactly. I can only imagine how it would have been during war time and right after!

Remington front sight… (reply)

This and other comments got me thinking and so I pulled the original New Model Army .44 that my grandpa bought back in the mid sixties out of the safe for a look. It had a fixed front sight, not a dovetail style. I wonder when they changed things up.

uncle hovey is certainly "out there" in the vacuum of deep space. Every family in the deep (old) south used to have an eccentric like him. Thankfully they were seldom dangerous. Like the real "uncle pill" who inspired the majority of my short stories.

He did it on the correct pistol. (reply)

Though with the shots he made, he could have done it with a decent front sight. But give him credit for not being afraid to try something new or weird. The Walker was the most powerful sixgun produced until the .357 Magnum. That's saying quite a lot!

John Taffin pointed me toward this!

Wild Bill Hickok was noted as a dead shot with his 1851 Colt Navy. Now we can see why. His gun was fitted with a Remington style front sight! It allowed adjustment for windage and elevation. He didn't use "Kentucky Windage" but knew where it would hit.

The pictures are screen captures from a video about the James Butler Hickok exhibit at the Cody Museum.
