As JimT and JT mention, proper fitting balls that shave a bit of lead when chambered will not back out under the relatively mild recoil generated even by a full charge of black powder. Way back in the 20th Century when I was playing around with "unauthorized" loads in the ROA, I don't recall having any back out either, and that was with loads that gave about the same recoil as a Blackhawk with 2400 under a 250 gr bullet. BUT, the bullets I was using were hard cast, emphasis on hard, and gave a bit of a workout when seating them in the cylinder. I suspect that if I'd used softer bullets I might have experienced bullet pull, but the friction fit of the linotype bullets was sufficient to keep them in place.

JIM IS CORRECT--A PROPER FITTING RB WILL NOT BACK OUT OF THE BP CYLINDER. A PROPER FITTING BALL WILL SHAVE A RING OF LEAD WHEN SEATED.

The proper size ball is swage fit to the chamber plus they do not have the weight of bullet. Recoil is not as fast either. John Taffin could speak more to this as he has more experience than I do.

Question: Do bullets/balls back out when...

firing a BP revolver? I suspect they can assuming an undersized bullet but what keeps them in the chamber? A BP cartridge pistol can be crimped of course. I just never read of this being any sort of an issue with BP.

Back story: I picked up some Kaido bullets for the .450 Adams which were intended to be used in the Ruger OA. They are 225ge and .456 diameter which is a good match for the Adams. However, they are tapered for ease of loading the ROA. At the moment, I do not have a short enough crimping die so I ran them as is. Third shot, the cylinder would no longer turn because of a bullet sticking out. I have an idea on how to crimp in the future but it got me to thinking.
