When we lived in Mozambique I made a spear and used it quite a lot. Driving through bandit territory I would ride in the back of the truck with my spear and a machete or two.

I made the blade from a good quality machete. The handle was hardwood. The blade was held in by 3 bolts and then I wrapped wire around the split part. I did a little "engraving" on the shaft to pretty it up. The blade was held in strong enough you can chop with it or stab or slash. When I left Mozambique I gave it to a friend of mine who is still over there.
