I believe it’s to lock the bolt back on an empty mag. Helps with reloads and then the bolt is already back to fire again. My Sterling is also open bolt but the bolt closes on an empty mag so you have to rack it back when you load a new mag.

Does anyone know the function of the little tab on the back of the mag follower ? Will the mag function in the gun without it ? Seems I have several where that tab is broken off, no Thompson to test it in.
