It is broad in both the amount of material covered and the different environments.
Very tried and true and no marketing of any whiz bang specialized gear.

older brothers who were scouts. By the time I was 10, 1950 I had it committed to memory. It was a late 40's edition I believe. Paperback size and about an inch thick. Ebay and Amazon probably have them for $10 or less. Lots of good woodscraft not just how to eat bugs and bark.

Larry Dean Olson and Tom Brown are the two best in my opinion. I use to read Larry Dean Olson's field guide until I was cross eyed.

are several versions, but the paperback light blue cover is the same one I use in case daily--perfect for his age through high school.
