"For an intermediate cartridge of around 1,000 fps, 8½ grains of Unique serves well, and outperforms most factory pistol cartridges of any caliber. Charges of 6½ grains of 5066 or 5 grains of Bullseye with either the Lyman 429244 or 429421 bullets will give fine, about-factory-velocity, performance."

Of course he also recommended 7.5grs too.

"Because the 429421 plain base has never given me any leading problems in my .44 guns, I choose it over the 429244 and save the trouble and expense incurred by the gascheck. Since the introduction of the .44 Magnum, I have quit using heavy handloads in the .44 Special, and now put together a mild, but hotter-than-factory combination of the Keith bullet, sized .429”, over 7.5 gr. of Unique. Velocity runs around 940 fps, a definite improvement over the cream puff factory round. I use only solid head .44 Special cases, since the old balloon head versions are wont to stretch erratically, making trimming a requisite before a bullet with a crimping groove may be effectively used."

I mostly shoot 8.5grs of Unique under the RCBS 45-270SAA bullet, it is accurate, and it has served me well from Alaska to New Mexico. Heck, I am a mid range 454 guy these days as well, a 325gr cast bullet at 1350-1400 fps is all I will ever need, and from the Freedom Arms it is comfortable to shoot, and laser pointer accurate.

LOADS FOR THE .45 COLT AND THE KEITH BULLET IS LISTED WITH 10.O GR. UNIQUE FOR 948 FPS. MOST OF MY LOADS IN THE 50s THROUGH THE 80s FOR THE .45 USED THIS LOAD. I NOW MOSTLY USE 8.0 GRAINS AS MY OLDER HANDS APPRECIATE IT.

10.0gr of Unique in a modern .45 Colt with a 454424 is still a great load. I have shot a lot of them over the years.

It is also a good load for .44 Magnum.

It was in Sixguns Cartridges and Loads as well. So that puts it back to the Mid 1930s

In the January 1969 G&A "Elmer's Favorite Sixgun Loads" has 10gr of Unique as the load for .45 Colt. Since it's gone dowm by 1.5gr, I imagine Unique has been reformulated since '69. That issue was the first gun magazine I ever bought and I still have it.

...using the Shootists anniversary .44 Spec. in the USFA SSA. GREAT gun and load combo!

I think it might have been the first game taken with that issue anniversary gun within the group.

This load for the Keith bullet in the .44 Special goes back at least to 1955 in SIXGUNS. Skeeter got it from Elmer and made it a standard load.
