Thanks everyone...... (reply)

For the offers, suggestions and thoughts on this, but at this time I am going to shelf it. The cost is rinsing to level higher than I wanted, I had envisioned a cheap, simple sanding rest but it has ballooned way beyond that. And to top it off I am not 100% sure it is something that would or could help with the plunge grind clean up.

I could do the grinding (reply)

I could do the grinding easy enough, but I don't have any corner rounding end mills to put a known radius on the edges.

Not so sure... (reply)

Without a surface grinder working, not so sure I could get the surface smooth and flat enough for him. Could probably get it really close with a draw file and hand finishing, but it has been many years since I was well practiced at bench work.

Looks simple enough...... (reply)

I have a good mill and an assortment of radius cutter, but my surface grinder is in the middle of being reconditioned and won't be done for a while. Should not take someone with the tools very long to knock one of those out to your specifications though.

Dimensions..... (reply)

Perfectly straight and flat tolerances make alot of difference in the price. .010 is a lot cheaper than .001. Surface finish makes a lot of difference in the price also.
Think about these options and I will ask his opinion also.

Dimensions..... (reply)

My main concerns are the top surface being perfectly flat and the radius being consistent and straight, beyond that the dimensions can vary. It doesn't have to be exact as I spec'd. If a machinist has a piece of steel that is 7.75 x 3.5 x 7/8" that works for me, no need to buy a new piece of steel to match the drawing specs. As to needing a CAD drawing, not necessary but thanks for the offer. By all means please ask your friend if this is something he would be interested in.

Thoughts (reply)

Just a few quick thoughts. You might look at McMaster-Carr for flat ground stock. There are several choices. You would have to drill and tap for your vise ext. as welding would warp the flat ground stock. The radii can be milled. I can check with my local machinist to see if this would be cheaper than welding, flat grinding, and chamfering a regular piece of steel. I cannot remember if he does flat grinding. One thing that needs to be decided are the "spot on" tolerances you need.
I am in Northwest Arkansas and if you want me to look into this, it will be Monday night before I can contact the machinist. I will also provide a CAD drawing for you if you want one.

I need a machinist or fabricator for a project......

Anyone here do machinist work or can recommend a good one for a simple project????

I need this made..............

http://gunnerblades.com/Temp/plungesander.jpg

Here is a video that shows what I am needing, best view around the 1:30 mark....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA4BVvfV3tQ

While this is a simple jig, the top surface flatness and edge radius must be spot on for this jig to work correctly, all of which are out of my equipment and skill level. If anyone can help with this click on the email box above and shoot me an email.

side bar....while I would like this jig it is not something I want to invest a lot of money into, but I will consider working out a deal on one of my available knives on my web site in trade.

Thanks,
Gunner
