Two muzzle devices come to mind, they're pretty comparable to each other. The one I've heard the most positive feedback on is the "Barking Spider" from Spikes. The other is Noveskes "Flaming Pig" brake. Both should boost barrel gas backpressure a bit to help drive an ARs gas system with subsonics. I'm sure other companies offer comparable brakes.

subs. A gun set up for supers won't cycle subs without a can adding additional backpressure and even then it is iffy. One way is to add an adjustable gas block and/or increase the port size until it runs subs; then it is overgassed for supers. There are specialty buffers out there for supressed guns but I have never used one.

For me personally, it is an annoyance to switch back and forth between subs/supers and re-zero with/without a can so I prefer to set a gun up and leave it alone.

John, did you have to run a different buffer and buffer spring to get it to run suppressed? My SBR 300 works fine unsuppressed, but won't run suppressed other than in single shot mode.

Any suggestions?

A Ruger American. Suppressed subsonic is pellet-gun quiet. Supers are louder of course. Recoil is nearly non-existant.

My wife has claimed the American and has run about 1400 rounds through it since August.

It has a lot of utility and uses very little powder as well.

Look into the 300 BO instead of a pistol caliber (reply)

The 300 BO runs roughly neck and neck with 357 Max, and feeds perfectly in ARs. All you really need is a different barrel and ammo, everything else is the same. Plus it's suppressible. Factory ammo is now getting more readily available by the day.

.357 mag is great in a rifle (reply)

Maybe we need a slightly larger case that can be necked up to .357, even better if it has the 7.62x39 casehead diameter so that bolts are already available.

Are the current pistol caliber AR's blowback or gas operated? A bottleneck .357 would surely need to be gas operated.

Alternative to AR pistol caliber rifle..... (reply)

I like the idea and almost ordered one a few weeks ago. I had questions and called them. Guy that answered the phone couldn't answer my questions and suggested I email them and the engineer would get back to me. I want the XDm version; since I shoot 99% cast bullet reloads, I had questions on groove diameter and free bore for handling cast. Well, still waiting for my answers. The down side is if you want a dedicated gun, you need to buy another handgun to dedicate to it.

Alternative to AR pistol caliber rifle.....

Personally I don't get having a AR in a pistol caliber, the 223 is by far a better and more powerful round. I understand the current rage with them, the NEW hot thing in firearms, but it's kinda like taking the 120mm cannon off a M1A Abrams and replacing it with a M2 50 cal Browning!

Now having said all that, this makes way more sense........

http://mechtechsys.com/

More compact of a weapon system and made for pistol calibers, AR's in pistol calibers can be really picky and un-reliable. Been on my list of wants for years, be a neat range gun. Actually a few years back I went to order one and they were 6 months back logged, never got around to ordering one.
