Something about being nice to have a flashlight around for emergencies. I just grinned and pulled my Fenix out of my back pocket. Did find out the pelican I carry in my Maxpedition bag had dead batteries though / need to start carrying spares...

I carry a Fenix every day - I think it is around 200 (reply)

Yep, and you ain't gotta explain why you have a baseball bat...but no glove or baseball to go with it in the truck/car.

Flashlight technology has boomed in the last couple of years. Not very long ago we carried Maglites and thought we were major cool. Still got a couple in my vehicles, but not actually for the light they put out. A 5C Maglite is still useful for certain things.

1000 lumens is a lot (reply)

That's a good output level for outdoors use. It must be a little fat with 4xAA but I've seen bigger. My nephew has a Nitecore (I think) that uses 3 fat rechargeable batteries and puts out maybe 3000 lumens. It's sized almost like a soft drink can.

For fairly cheap you can buy lights in Home Depot and Lowes that put out 1000 lumens, but they are big and take 2 or 3 D-cells.

I've got a Fenix with 220 lumens and another with 320 Lumens. The latest versions of those models put out 500 and 900 lumens. Unfortunately they become outdated fast. Actually 200 is pretty good indoors and 300 is not bad outdoors, but if you can get 1000 then it's that much better.

Awesome flashlight: Nitecore EA41

I bought this for our California trip (blinding light for when I can't carry a gun...) but never really used it until Cub Scout campout weekend. I am extremely impressed - top end is roughly 1,000 lumens. If you shine it up in the air it is an absolute beacon!! Mine was like a light saber in comparison with everyone else's flashlight when on full blast and it uses AA batteries. Not super cheap at $50 but a really good light at that price!
