Same here. We'd have made it last year except for inflexible schedules and a family emergency.

Schedules should not be a problem next year. We will keep our fingers crossed on the latter.

another brown bear was shot with Winchester 115 fmjs (reply)

I have had zero experience with brown bears but I have seen the pictures and a few in zoos.

I have had quite a bit of experience with 9MMs and can only provide the following comment:

A 9mm would beat the heck out of a flat rock...... but just a little bit.

another brown bear was shot with Winchester 115 fmjs (reply)

Thank you for the kind words though it is now 'ex-cop'.

I can't deny that I carried a SP-101, during the spring, in AK where documented bear-munchings have occurred. It was loaded with 200 grain LBT's, doing roughly 1000 fps from that gun and backed by a 1911 loaded with hardball and spare mags. Hey, I flew up with what I could get on De Plane. Had I lived there I would have been packing a heavy loaded 45 or 454 at minimum and I would never leave the heavy stuff at home and carry a little gun for convenience, or because I thought I knew what to expect from bears on any given day. I kinda know Phil from another forum and yes, he's forgot more about bears than I want to know. AT my age, I'm OK with that.

Which reminds me... we need to all get together again sometime soon. Hope your wife and family are all doing well.

Loads like that Give the nervous system some adrenaline, too. One reason I liked shooting 125gr SuperVel's in my SA Ruger...never dull and routine. My then 12 year old sister, could pot over-ripe cantaloupe and pumpkins on my great-Uncles garden patch -- he just got the biggest laughs at watching the vaporization, and that lanky young lady ride the recoil, Good memory.

That Nine he was shooting certainly had some zip..... (reply)

but I am not tempted to try it, on more than the usual random woodchuck/varmint AKA: for fun and gun activities.

However, it might be useful in 'amatuer' civilian hands ALA CCW.[and bears] My question is.....what newer/current'concealable' Semi-auto would be up to that, over the long haul..?
My regular 'magazine-fed' carry, is one of those Gag-g-glock '9' things.

In What model of the newer and modern family of Nines, would hot loads like that be appropriate?

D-A is fine, but flat and concealable counts heavily. Yusta be 'good looks' were part of the buy, but today F-ugly is, as F-ugly does.

I renewed the CCW, and much a I am a "J-frame addict', in all sorts of configs and calibers...I'm kinda fore-seeing some Stormy Civil Weather, esp given the Loaded Political Dice.

We are supposed to believe, that the scornful, barely-disguised fix right out of the corrupt ballot box, will lead us to Paradise.. Well, The Devil's Own will follow her path right to Martial Law.

"It is all the fault of those paranoid and violent gun-owners". I am certain that such "Incidents" will sprout like bloody flowers -- Sooo....I'm not planning an Alamo, but well-armed mobility is not out of the question.

To paraphrase: 'Every time I could see a vital area...' says wonders about keeping your cool under extreme pressure. My approach would have been more, "AIM-FOR-THE-BIG-PART!!!" and repeat---never having been around an enthusiastic bear.

I'm sure he does and I'm equally sure some moron is reading that and inferring he can do the same thing with his old stash of 115 grain Silvertips.
