I'm not interested in anything under 55 grain at all... (reply)

so it looks like I'm good to go. I would like to try some heavier bullets though so the 7" twist in the AR should help in that regard. My Mini-14 is the newer tactical model and it's a 1:9". I haven't tried anything over 60 grains in it (except the 64 grain Winchester Razorback hunting stuff and it wasn't good...but it was excellent in my former 1:9 AR).

Do you think a 7" twist is too much for 55 grain bullets? (reply)

Many years ago, I had a Mini-14 with a 1:7 twist barrel. I was hand loading varmint loads mostly with 50 grain bullets designed to "explode" on impact. These shot extremely well in my bolt gun, but when I tried them in the Mini I wasn't even on target. I moved the targets In until I finally figured out that the bullets were disintegrating in flight. I can only think that these super lightly constructed bullets couldn't handle the high RPMs of th 1:7 barrel.

55 FMJ or factory soft point ammo never gave me any problems.

I have not heard of a problem (reply)

I know I see people running various 50-55 grain bullets fast out of 20" 1:8 barrels. I don't know that I've seen a 1:7 barrel but somebody makes 1:6.5 barrels for the guys shooting 90 grain bullets. I think if you loaded up 40 or 45 grain bullets intended for a .22Hornet and such you could have vaporization before hitting the target. I've heard that the 1:8 barrels work really well with bullets like the 60 grain Sierra.

I shoot 55 gr bullets in my 1/8 and 1/7 twist AR's most of the time and can see no difference in accuracy vs 1/9. Now, the little 45 grainers, that's a different story because they frequently don't make it to the 100 yd target; I save those for the 1/9 guns.

DSG Arms is good to go. There is a lot of discussion about these uppers on ARFCOM, apparently the barrels were made up by Seekins for an order for Radical Firearms that fell thru. I've been tempted to pick one up myself, even though I have too much AR stuff already.

I have had two Rock River Arms rifles and my current M4 lite weight rifle was built using a modified RRA complete upper, always been 100% satisfied with all my RRA stuff. I prefer the Wylde chamber, seems to give better over all accuracy verse a standard 556 Nato or 223 chamber with what every ammo you use.

AR upper suggestions please...

I got rid of my previous AR and bought a Mini-14 Tactical. It's not as accurate but it's good enough, extremely reliable with all ammo and I really like its operating system better overall. But I do have my Spikes lower I built with quality components and need to finish it off with a good upper. I want something in the way of an 18" mid length barrel that's accurate but I also don't want to go overboard and buy a Wilson upper for $1500 either (or whatever they cost today). I'm not opposed to buying the components and building it or just buying a complete upper. I just want something that's accurate and reliable when I'm done, a barrel that has the right sized gas port drilled in it, etc. I am leaning to a nitrided barrel. Not sure if I should go with a standard 5.56 or a Wylde chamber, etc. Just figured I'd ask you guys, get some advice and then go for it. Any particular brand or thing I should avoid? Thanks,
