Never thought of Tamarack for lumber... (reply)

Is an interesting wood and several of the ones that came down are fairly large and straight as an arrow. It is a deciduous tree with leaves like pine needles that grows in wet areas. It is considered more closely related to evergreens than to other deciduous trees, but is a hardwood that burns great. One of the the ones that came down has a real nice burl that hopefully can be salvaged, it is currently under the big white pine though. We have a farm park nearby with a steam powered sawmill that I may talk to about turning some of this into boards. Some people call Tamarack, Larch and the scientific name is Larix laricina.

Firewood (reply)

I know it sounds twisted but before all the shoulder surgeries one of my most favorite things to do was split oak rounds. To hit them square several times then hear the next hit make that totally different pop sound was like taking the lead in the 440 yard dash. You KNEW you were going to win. Unfortunately too many heavy concrete tank lids over the last 18 years means my wood splitting days with a maul are about done.

I need to start doing similar... (reply)

Had a storm come through here last weekend that knocked over 15 trees on the property, mostly Tamaracks which will make good firewood, but also a 100' tall white pine that I may try to have cut into boards. Thankfully none of them fell on any buildings or equipment stored outside.
