A shop customer has a late Mini-14 with a scout (reply)

scope set-up. I think it is a Leupold but whatever is the easiest to see IER scope I have seen yet. One heck of a set-up and he says it holds to 3" or less at 100 yards from field positions. I think THAT is remarkably good. Only the availability and price of magazines deters me. Magazine availability and 30-year familiarity are what keep me with an AR.

The AR appeals to me a bit because of Lego concept but they just don't have that rifle feel and I'm not fond of the scopes being mounted so high over the bore because there is no drop in the comb.

I lucked into a Mini 14 from a friend who had acquired it in a trade a few years back. It was lightly modded exactly as I wanted, and I've never looked back. Stone reliable, and accurate enough to do what I need it to do every time. I cut my teeth on the M-14, and the AR platform just has never felt "right" to me.

It's a buyers market these days! (reply)

I'm honestly amazed at some of the deals I see come across the table lately. You still see the guys with their 'custom' no name franks guns wanting $1000+, but I have seen quite a few decent quality AR's in the $600 range. I just wish AK prices had fallen in proportion! I'd like to pick up another $350 AK! Seems like nowadays they are running north of $600!

Turning this one into a stainless Mini-14 Tactical 5.56. I don't want to spend the time trying to figure out if it needs a heavier buffer spring or whatever so I put the upper back on its original lower and it's up for sale and the stainless Ranch Rifle has been ordered since this morning. I miss my Mini14 and its rifle like feel. It will be my carbine and when I get ready to put an upper on my Spikes Tactical lower I built, I will probably just buy a ready assembled BCM 20" Mil-spec standard rifle upper. That's what I wanted when I bought this carbine but it was sort of in an AR crunch and picking and choosing wasn't what it is today.

Chalk the AR15 thing up as a learning experience :-) (reply)

No reflection on the fans of the AR, but rob's experience has made me even more fond of my Mini 14. You can see everything that goes on in that little gizmo, and on the rare occasions that it doesn't work right it's usually no problem to diagnose and fix it.

Used my Chrony for the first time. Bought it from Clint Bryant, T think, several years ago...first shot it disappeared. Fearing the worst I got up to look around my 55 gallon suppressor and was relieved to find it had just blown about from muzzle blast.. switched to the 38 spl barrel and had a bunch of fun...
