Ended up with the XDS in 45. I do have the M&P Compact in 9mm - great gun too. I was looking for something slimmer than the Compact.
A little fat for a pocket gun.

S&W Shield question for Rob L, but others as well (reply)

Seriously, don't buy a Shield until you try the M&P40 Compact. I've shot them both and the Compact has a much better grip, takes full-size mags and it is the softest shooting small .40 I've ever fired. The Glock 27 became dead to me after I fired my first M&P40C.

I've shot the Nine plenty, but the Fotay is...... (reply)

....the only Shield we ever get on trade-in here in the shop. To a man (or woman) every .40 Shield traded in is because it is too snappy for the owners.

We've had plenty of satisfied .40 Shield owners, far more than those who trade 'em back in, but it seems to be a known issue....at least for some. Charlie Askins would've probably declared that uninterested .40 Shield owners had lace on their panties.

Frankly, I feel the .40 cartridge in general is a high pressure wannabe that will never measure up to its Daddy, the virtually perfect 10mm. If ever there was a superb semi-auto pistol round, that would have to be it, but now we are comparing apples and watermelons.

I imagine that snappy or otherwise, no Shield will ever exhibit the recoil of a .357 J-frame. Heck, with the wrong grips and right ammo even a J-frame thutty-eight can be uncomfortable.

I don't like the 40 S&W Shield as much as the 9mms. just a (reply)

tad uncomfortable...BUT I bought the 40, knowing it would probably be going to a friend's wife that lives on a remote ranch and they already have several 40S&W caliber. guns (She likes having it she ran into a Mountain Lion on a sheep kill and kept it at bay with rocks.) Now, she has an better resource.
So yeah ammo compatibility is nice.

S&W Shield question for Rob L, but others as well

I have a 9mm shield and really like it. I've been thinking of picking up another if I find a good deal to keep in the truck. I can't carry at work, and there are often times I'm running errands after work that I'd feel better if I were armed. My 'truck guns' consist of a Glock 22 and a SUB2000 that uses G22 mags. I have a handful of spare mags around the truck as a just in case type of thing. I'm thinking it makes more sense to look for a .40 cal Shield since there are always several magazines worth of ammo in the truck.

I was just wondering how the .40 compares to the 9 in shootability. In a full size gun, it's not a big deal, but the Shield is far from full size, although it does seem to shoot as comfortably as a full sized gun. That being said, you cannot beat the laws of physics. So, how is the .40 to shoot vs the 9mm?

Thanks,
Doug K
