I'm sure he had more clay to put on the knife. He probably just repacked it and tried his trick on the gun store counter guy at the next gun store. Good story and worth the retelling, Hobie!

wrong because you don't know the secret lingo of the gun salesman (after all he has 215 guns).

I get them all the time as well and guns aren't the only thing they ask questions it turns out they have all the answers to so that they know you're the idiot.

I had a guy bring in a "bowwie" knife he'd just dug from his field and so he knew it was civil war vintage and bound to be worth big money to me. With all the clay packed around it I didn't think it was right that he knew it was a "bowwie" knife. I asked permission to remove the clay as I wasn't going to buy the clay. He said yes and I peeled it back. Right there on the ricasso was the word every civil war collector yearns to see... "Pakistan"!!!!!

I know, not much to do with your post but I love to tell this story.

I contacted the seller because I've heard of Old Model Ruger Single Six revolvers being customized to centerfire calibers with 5 shot cylinders. I've heard of 38 Specials on this frame but not 357 Magnums. I knew the chances were slim, but I was thinking that the gun might be one of those great deals that turn up from time to time.

A particularly tacticool gunshop. Guy behind the counter was showing a fairly nice genuine Colt SAA .45 7 1/2" blue revolver to a customer who had asked why they wanted 1,900 dollars for it. It was in very nice condition with some minor blue wear right at the muzzle. Walnut with Colt medalions. The guy tells the customer it is expensive because it is an original issue Colt from 1874, the first year they were issued. Gunshop dude tells the customer he has paperwork on that fact. Tells the customer that originally they all came with 13 1/2" barrels from Colt but the infantry cut them down to 7 1/2" so they would be easier to use. Really. That was the conversation.
