Problems arise in my mind because I remember when the people of this country were pretty much free. I am old enough to remember when policemen were considered friends and were not a separate class from "civilians". I flew commercially when all you had to do was pay for a ticket and get on board. I realize that terrorism has finished that, but the problem is not terrorism as much as it is the disarming of the public. I traveled across the country as a 14 year old with a 1911 45 ACP and Ruger 357 Magnum in my carry-on, along with 500 rounds of ammo. No one worried about me, checked me, or even thought to ask what I had. And I never terrorized anyone either. I bought and sold guns long before I got my driver's license. It was not a big deal. I bought blackpowder and reloading components as a 15 year old without any problems. I had my first car when I was 12 and even drove to school when I was 14. I was not allowed on school property with it so I had to park it across the street. The local Police told me ( and my friends who had cars) that we could drive in the desert and across public highways as long as we were careful. They also told us they would arrest us if they caught us driving on the highways .. and we never did. Times have changed and not for the better. It angers me to have to show ID to do almost anything and everything any more. Why? Because I can remember when we did not need to. Not only that, I was privileged to hang around old-timers who grew up before income tax, Social Security and even electricity. I know what the country was and what it has become. I don't like it. And, I am enough of a realist to know that nothing we can do will stop it. But I still don't have to like it. I don't know what this has to do with the Patriot Act. I have however noticed that for the most part, when the government passes laws or regulations, we usually do not end up with more liberty. We end up with more government. That is not considered a good thing by many of the "Founding Fathers".
